New...please help

I got munchkin for my kids for christmas and can not figure out how the game starts. i get that you deal the cards and stuff, but what is the point of the die and when do you use it? when player 1 takes their first turn do they just start picking up cards. sorry for the crazy questions. We just really want to play and I cant figure it out.
