It says to go through the discards, but it does not specify a specific pile, so you don't need to do so, either. So, it's one card from either pile. I would suggest not taking forever in your searching, however. It could prove vexing to the other players and then you'll find them plotting your demise. . .

There are ways for others to break the combo, though. Performing any Class ability that requires a discard, cursing you or someone else to lose an Item, discarding a Hireling, or playing a Go Up a Level card are all ways they could bury your Wand of Dowsing.
