One-Shot Items

Quick Question...

I know any card with a gold value can be carried, but can carried one-shot items be used during combat since they are not equipped? The rules say...

"You may also use one-shot cards, such as potions, from your hand during combat. A card is a one-shot if it says "Usable Once Only" or if it gives a Level increase.

So, if I had "Nasty-Tasting Sports Drink" (200 gold, +2 to any side during any combat. Usable once only) carried on the table, can I then NOT use it during combat because it is a) not equipped or b) a one-shot that is not in my hand
