I'm fairly sure that when you use it, it becomes a one-shot and no longer adds its normal bonus to the combat. This seems clear from the wording as it says the Ship becomes a +8 attack. So an unenhanced Fireship goes from a +2 to a +8 when you choose to sacrifice it, a total change of +6.
In other words, you can't have your Fireship and use it too. . .
