There's nothing in rules telling that, if my cutting attack is considered crushing cause it doesn't pass over DRcut*2, I had to use DRcut.
It makes much more sense using DRcr. |

sword does 2pts cutting damage. silk shirt has DR0 with DR 1 vs cutting. use edge protection rules: acording to you, since the damage was not more than needed to have the cutting modifier, we should use the DR that is not for cutting (DR0 instead of DR1). that changes the whole thing though, since 2 is defiantly more than enough to qualify for the cutting modifier. the way is makes the most sense, is that cutting attacks lose the modifer if it does not do more than DRx2. |

When you apply DRcr, you already passed to crushing. No more edge protection rule. The passage from cut to cr due to edge protection rule is irreversible. The outcome is confronted with appropriate DR. Stop. That is: there's no need of a further step in the algoritm. |

silk shirt DR0 (DR 1 vs cutting attacks) cutting attack damage = injury sustained 1 = 0 crushing injury 2 = 1 crushing injury 3 = 3 cutting injury 4 = 4 cutting injury 5 = 6 cutting injury 6 = 7 cutting injury 7 = 9 cutting injury the attack is a cutting attack no matter what, so the DR you use is for vs cutting and not the normal DR (which is for everything else) if you did it your way it would be like this: 1 = 1 crushing injury 2 = 2 crushing injury 3 = 3 cutting injury 4 = 4 cutting injury 5 = 6 cutting injury 6 = 7 cutting injury 7 = 9 cutting injury the first 2 become different since, using your interpretation, if the damage is not enough (more than DRx2) convert the cutting attack into crushing and us the DR for crushing. which is wrong since you get a loop at 2pts of damage (2 pts of damage from a sword is not enough for going through DR1 so change it to crushing and use DR0, but the 2pts is more than enough for DR0 so change it back...) damage "Type" never changes, the injury changes. its still a cutting attack, but it did crushing damage because it could not get through the armor (in this case a silk shirt for damage less than 3). |

I don't care about loop. Rules are a formal systems, and you had to stop the algoritm arbitrarily. No paradoxes in this context. GURPS' rules are modellization of reality, not gamestic tools.
The second table seems a good simulation to me, so it's fine. |

I'm pretty sure that as regards cutting damage converting to crushing, that doesn't mean that we use the lower cr damage listing for the armour, if any, against such attacks. Otherwise there would be very little benefit to a higher DR against Cut, such as that afforded by mail.
