A nitpick, but since how crossbows work and you can use anyone's ST with it (a ST 12 could be loaded by someone with 36 ST and you could use it with his damage), I think this would be an exception where it would be allowed.

Mind, I'm not thinking in DF terms, so maybe this doesn't matter...

On terms for caltrops, the extra damage from Weapon Master (or whatever trait) is from them knowing exactly how to set the trap so they'll step on the caltrops most effectively, even in hasty situations.
