For a weapon, anything that's at least decent will do- Leon will actually use his broadsword only as a weapon of last resort.

For armour, Leon heavily leans towards Prevents Damage in the tradeoff between that and mobility constriction. The aim is to protect his fragile body from as much of the attacks coming at him as possible.
