Rather close together too, depending on range and choke. I certainly wouldn't want to take a load of birdshot at 3 feet, for example. Especially not to, say, the throat.

Which brings me round to the estimate from the military being a load of bullhockey, as all you need to do is make a good enough hole in a vein or artery in a person who is too far away from paramedics/hospitals to kill them... it's the disabling or killing them quickly part thats tricky.
