From what you describe I like the limited gizmo idea and give her some good investigative plots where knowing gene engineering and the black market is good for figuring out the plot, knowing likely manufacturers or sources and recognizing marketability.
These skills wont give her a lot of combat utility but can let her be part of the mental action and just give her some good combat training.
Maybe some special biological attack like a custom virus she is immune to that she coats darts with or can dump in a water cooler or food supply to make a lot of people sick.

A black market specialist can be useful, especially if shes the only one. And it is a good reason for even a scientist type to learn some basic combat skills.
