Default [Pyramid 3-37] Beam Weapon Design and Ultra-Tech

David's Eidetic Memory article in Pyramid 3-37 was a design sequence for beam weapons. I bought the issue yesterday and cranked out a design spreadsheet for it real fast (it's what I do). Assuming a few things I spotted as possible errata are fixed I'll see where I can post it. It should automate everything, even the LC calculation.


Note: The beam weapon design sequence has been in constant flux since GURPS Vehicles, Second Edition and the Pyramid design system is similar to, but different, from the version used in the Ultra-Tech 4e draft. It's been interesting to see how this system has changed over time, as I believe it's had more iterations than even the projectile weapon sequence (which is saying something).


I've gone through and emulated all of the Ultra-Tech designs that fall under this system. Most of the UT guns were somewhat "eyeballed" after their first iteration was cranked through the playtest draft system so don't expect perfect matches, but they should be very close (exception seems to be the very large beam weapons, which vary quite a bit in weight).

Nothing in the design sequence itself, but the descriptions appear to be wrong in a few spots. I want to make sure that they, not the design numbers, are incorrect.

Here's what I've found:


p. 12 FOCAL ARRAY

* The stated range multipliers are incorrect (do not match the design sequence values - see Range, p. 13).

* Second sentence should read:


Decide if the weapon has a tiny (¥0.1), very small (¥0.3), small (¥0.5), medium (¥1), large (¥2), very large (¥4), or extremely large (¥8) focal array relative to typical weapons of its class.


p. 13 DAMAGE

* The example Vega Machine Pistol should have an armor divisor of (3), not (2).



p. 14 SHOTS

* Weight for B cells should be 0.05 lb, not 0.5 lbs.
