Not to seem like DF fanboy, but I'm taking a lot of DF material and doing a bit of addition/subtraction wherever necessary (i.e., small tweaks) and using it in a straight fantasy game. The Justicar makes a good template for a high level investigator -- in fact, one of the major NPCs in my game was made with this template, with another 25 points in abilities and skills added on. Some of the summoners templates make good bases for certain secret magic circles in my game world. And I've done this all "after the fact".

Not sure if that makes the templates generally useful. For my purposes, NONE of them are perfect "out of the box" -- the characters just don't make sense. But then, I'm not running a DF game. (It's a 150 point game that doesn't focus on dungeon delving.) But with additions to skills, judicious attention to advantages, etc., they make for good NPCs. Or starting points for characters (using the excellent DF on the cheap).

Lets not forget the whole host of Mixed Profession Lenses which covers all the possible combinations from Dungeon Fantasy 1 (Bard-Barbarian, Thief-Wizard, etc. - 110 lenses in all!)

And a few Holy Warrior and Druid variants as well.

Thanks. I had completely forgotten that DF12 had an Assassin template...

And I expect to see more templates in October's Pyramid, since it's supposed to be Dungeon Fantasy themed. Now, I hope it includes something other than templates! (I would love to have an adventure, two articles on new or variant templates, one on monsters, and one of the nature of the genre)

I wouldn't mind some Lenses. I have thought for a while that there is good capacity for lenes to make the template more distinct and themed. Wouldn't be interesting enough for a book, but a two page Pyramid article sure why not?
