Well, there are a few reasons that the traveler didn't engage in a lot of social interaction: It's off-putting to the natives; It's time away from the more factual studies that seem to occupy the Great Race's interest; And it overlooks the strengths of the traveler's intellect. Plus, there's not a great deal to be learned from such that they wouldn't either already know, or could learn by interrogating the exchangee.
The upshot is... If you can get him to go to the pub with you, you should be ready to pick up the tab :)
