Neither, really. Vampires are undead humans, who exist essentially as one of the many physical manifestations of evil in the world. However, MH3 intentionally avoids going into much detail on the ancient origins of vampires, as that's exactly the kind of flavor that most GMs want to tweak to suit their own preferences. So if you want vampires to be magical, biological, or Cthonian avatars, Monster Hunters will do its best to avoid contradicting you. :)

MH1 simplifies things a bit to avoid skill creep. A truly knowledgeable hunter already needs almost two dozen skills -- having half a dozen or more Theology specialties would just push that to its limit. Thus, Theology is expanded a tiny bit, to cover religious groupings instead of specific religions. The main split is Abrahamic (Christianity, Judaism, Islam), Shamanic (most Native American beliefs, Shintoism, and so on), and Voodoo (including Santeria, Candomble, etc., in addition to actual Voudoun).

Remember, this is a worked genre series, like DF or Action. It's approximately 98% canonical. That 2% reflects a few things that I saw the need to change in the name of genre fidelity and simplicity.

Haven't made up my mind about that yet. What is the specialty meant to be? It does looks kind of like one of those combat all rounder characters (not that there is anything wrong with that) that I used to build with GURPS. A melee fighter with no combat skill above 15?

At least the joke character had a good way of disabling opponents! and could use his luck to supplement his low comabt skills.

I see I didn't phrase my question correctly, yet you still managed to answer it, I meant to ask if thier powers were magical or biological. I now assume that both are equally valid for an MH campaign, yes?

Although they're probably not part of the MH purview, I'd say that the Chinese Ghost Story series otherwise fit the monster hunter genre quite well with a very Buddhist/Taoist cosmology. Can't think of other examples at the moment, but I've seen plenty.

Vetala, Bhuta, and Pishacha are all Hindi beasties. And then in Buddhism there are Rakshasa. Am sure that there are similar Tibetan ones, but my Google Fu is not strong today.
