Death and Looting the Body

While playing Munchkin Bites today, a rather interesting question arose. When a player dies, do the cards in that player's hand get laid out face up or face down?

The rules read: "Lay out your hand beside the cards you had in play." but do not specify beyond that. My thinking is the phrase "lay out" implies face up, but that alone won't be sufficient for the rules lawyer type players with whom I play.

Is there any definitive ruling on this question? Thanks for your help.

The cards should be laid out face up. The players should be able to see what they're choosing.
