Well, you can loot a tamed Monster at Death. The cards from Death looting go into your hand, so this is no different than the Monster cards a player who has just died had in his hand: They go into the looters hand and since it is a Monster card, you can't play it as a Steed.

So, upon the ranger's death, what was a tamed steed monster card becomes a normal monster card - that can be looted like a monster card from the ranger's hand.
