You could also trade it, couldn't you? Let me know if it's not ok. If it is really that early in the game you could pawn in off for some small bonus item. The other person would think they are getting some awesome deal until they draw a better big item.

Absolutely you can trade, since it's an Item. You can trade at any time during the game, as long as you and your trading partner are not in combat at the time. Traded Items, however, must be in play to begin with and must stay in play afterward.

Yes, of course.
Directed at all posters: as a general rule in discussions like this one, we're going to be talking about the standard rules and not call out every common exception. In this case, both Cheat! cards and the Dwarf race will let you use extra Big items, and so will some Hirelings and some Item Enhancers. There's no point in going over the whole list of exceptions, however, until the person asking the question is clear on the actual rule. It's kind of like asking if a restaurant has Coke and being told all the things they DON'T have. It's potentially useful information, but it doesn't help clarify the question that was actually asked.
