But simply putting the sword there is not a full-power attack. A parry is a deflection or a block with the blade, it is not a strike with all the wielder's strength against the incoming attack.
Interposing a sword in the path of a jumping wolf could be done as a parry, yes, but it does not seem to be realistic that this should be equally effective as waiting for the wolf to jump and then thrusting the sword into his path.
