Trojan Horse confusion

The Trojan Horse card is something like the Wandering Monster card in that it lets you play a monster into someone else's combat. But here's the situation that we had:

Player A (Level 4) Fights Monster X, defeats it.
Player B then plays Trojan Horse and Monster Y, which has a "Will Not Pursue Level 4 or Below" statement.
Player A is unable to defeat the monster at this time, and MUST run away.

Now, Did Player A gain a level from the Monster X, thereby becoming Level 5 and now forced to actually roll to run away? Or is Player A still level 4 and can run away from Monster Y without penalty?
