1) They don't take as long to develop, illustrate, lay out, and edit, which is a real concern when we're ALSO updating and reprinting nearly every Munchkin product; 2) They let us try some things (Fairy Dust cards, Santa monsters) that might not support even a 56-card expansion; and 3) Fans dig 'em, as evidenced by sales figures and reactions we hear at conventions and on the forums. The really lazy approach would have been to tell everyone, "Eh, we're busy upgrading all our old stuff, so come back next year if you want NEW Munchkin." The problem is, when you tell people to come back later, some of them don't. We don't want our fans to wander off, so this was a compromise that let us focus a lot of our energy on the reprints, but still put out new content as well. (And, I'll add, we DID release Munchkin Cthulhu 4, which is a more substantial expansion.) Next year, we have a new 168-card core set planned, at LEAST one new tuckbox expansion and probably two, and, yes, more boosters -- because we like them, fans like them, and retailers REALLY like them.
