I was going to ask much the same and considered starting a thread to get ideas on potential specialties for a fantasy or low tech miliatry organization.

This is a thing of beauty, just what I needed for my Mexican Drug War campaign idea. Thanks for making the effort...

I always use some form of "guided character creation," whether an interview, templates, or something like this. I've probably used related methods, too. The only generalization I can make is that I simply don't believe in announcing a campaign, naming a point level, and seeing what the players drag back. I like to be involved before the first point gets spent.

Sadly, I cannot find any other examples on my hard drive. That doesn't mean they never existed, merely that I've only used a PC to keep campaign notes since 1992, and I've had three hard drives die in the intervening 18 years.

Thank you, guys, for your kind words. It's hasty writing for sure, so it's good to know that it's somewhat readable!

Incidentally, the resulting campaign is going well. You can find my weekly recaps here. You can probably guess which PCs (and NPCs) have what backgrounds, if you follow along.

I of course stole this and foisted it onto my players in the next campaign. Would have paid $20 for it; care to formalize this into a product for Action? Call it Action: Backgrounds and Training Sequences, or something. Sort of like a powerups for Action.

I used these for an upcoming campaign, even put them into a gdf. I added a few occupational specialities, and the point base for my game is lower than Kromm's The Company, so I didn't include his base template in the gdf. But all of his specialties are there, and working up his template from the one that I put in there would be very simple. Anyway, I've put the file up on the GCA Repository -- so feel free to grab it if you'd like.

Now that it's been released, it's not eligible for sale on e23. The Dungeon Fantasy On the Cheap fan-mod precluded the creation of 150- and 200-pt variants by SJ Games, for instance. Thankfully, we got the 200-pt variants of Monster Hunters before anyone could come up with a fan-mod version of MH1...

I'll have to check this out when I get home.

No, that's not how it works. It does preclude Eric selling his manuscript to e23 under the usual e23 terms. SJG is perfectly able to come up with their own new versions as well, if they thought it would be financially viable, and they're also able to negotiate a one-off agreement with Eric if they thought it would be financially viable to try to sell something that was already available for free.

It might be more plausible for them to put up Eric's manuscript as a free PDF on e23 though. Less work for everyone.

I'm quite sure Kromm is clever enough to make this a product, were he so inclined. Not that it needs to be; we've got a perfectly useful game aid right here. I was simply saying that it was exactly the sort of thing that I would buy from e23 were it for sale.
