I suppose it will only be a week or two until we know for sure...
Well, Oriental Warriors are a DF thrope, and a couple of Asian themed booklets would fit the style.

Besides, being overblown, badass, and showing off, is part of the DF fun.

I'm suddenly remained of my old AD&D2 game back in the 1990s. My wife's character, a thief, hired an NPC guard who was basically a streltsy, complete with large arquebus and an even larger bardiche used as a musket rest. Fun times, fun times.

...There's more practical difference there than a cave they were going to use to store smuggled rum/have found a treasure map leading to full of magical beasties, natural hazards, unnatural hazards and natives who worship a cthulhuesque entity...

Which, if anything, backs up your point

I don't know why, but this gives me the image of a pirate as a swashbuckler/bard without much in the way of spells, but with Terror and Rapier Wit.

Maybe. You'd need to find a way around the veeeeery slow reload times of TL4 firearms, tho. Otherwise, the firearms become crossbows with sound effects that get dropped after the opening volley, and then it's blade-to-blade.

Maybe an 'aquatic' lens for the existing templates would be the way to go after all...

As far as I'm concerned the DF series should hammer away at "kewl" things like ninjas and pirates. I think a book about the high seas would be really good for a DF campaign because pirate stories have treasure maps, loot and other pirates following the party to get the treasure too. Treasure Island is a good book for adventure ideas and the movie the Goonies has many ideas for tricks and traps for adventures. A sailing adventure is often fun as there are many hazards along the way and then you can go to an island with strange creatures as you look for treasure. Sinbad has many ideas too. So for me, I would really like a book about High Seas DF.

Other cool topics are Elder Things, vampires, werewolves, ghosts, dark temples and drow er... I mean shadow elves.

Dunno... I would rather not see them forced to fit into the dungeon pastiche, but brought in as an appropriate player "class" for a hypothetical sea-based supplement.

Yeah, the more I think about it, 'aquatic' lenses for the existing templates (barbarian+aquatic lens=Viking!) and a supplement about seaborne adventuring in general (ships, monsters, aquatic dungeons, relevant skills, etc) instead of focusing just on the guys singing 'yo-ho-ho' seems like the way to go. Because really, all pirates are is adventurers* who manage to annoy the powers-that-be and (usually) know how to swim...

*okay, they're basically seafaring bandits. But they're seafaring bandits with *style*

I'd rather see them get a book of their own, separate from the DF series.

In DF, that's easy, surely?

Magically enhanced firearms.
