That applies to anything and everything. Alien? Took 90 minutes to fight off one of them. Aliens? Died in batches nonstop for like 2 freaking hours.

If the GM throws 10 of something at you, that means one isn't tough. If one isn't tough, generally, and the GM throws one at you, you're in trouble.

Quite commendable.

Although more seriously, I personally think "pirates" and my brain leaps to "Swashbuckler, Thief, and the two combinations thereof." So, it's more like, what would Pirates be able to do, and what niche would they fill, and why would they be awesome, when you already have them? I can't think of anything that answers that . . . right now. Perhaps someone else can, which is why there are writer's guidelines and submission guidelines posted up somewhere. ;)

What i would rather see is DF: High Seas that Covers how/what lens are needed for the base 'classes' so that it covers Pirates, Privateers, and Navy. how to run Ship vs Ship, Ship vs Monster (plus stat for some key Sea monsters: Dire Giant Squids, Kraken, Sea Serpents, Sirens etc) and Ship vs Shore.

Well, your analysis of the sage is interesting but flawed. Go back to AD&D and you'll see that the sage is essentially an NPC "class" of its own that can cast spells intended for just about any spellcasting class, yet it isn't in itself part of any of those classes. Or check out just about any "wise man" NPC in town in a computer game, who can somehow identify and recharge just about every sort of artifact of power – be it holy, wizardly, or something else – and yet who lacks the power to go out in the world and use magic to do anything about the Big Problem the PCs face. These are the archetypes for the sage. The entire point is that he's a soft-target know-it-all who dabbles in spells but isn't a true caster. Wizards are self-appointed "sages," but that's a conceit. In old-school fantasy, they don't study books and seek wisdom – they're artillery. Again, that's what DF is going for in its pastiche of the old-school FRPG "genre."

As for the ninja . . . He won't usurp the martial artist or thief at all. He distinctly lacks the martial artist's powerful chi abilities and the thief's comfort with urban skullduggery and macro-scale dungeon traps. His superhuman powers are focused almost entirely on gadgetry, while his stealth abilities are more in the "stalking victims" category. If there's any niche he treads close to, it's that of the artificer. However, he isn't a gadget-maker but a gadget-user.

To be fair to them, Alien was a group of civilians who had no idea what they were dealing with and who's heaviest weapon was a blow torch designed for welding, iirc, while Aliens was a fully prepared military commando unit.

Every time I even consider possible pirate niches I wind up going "Like DF GMs need an excuse to channel Legend of Zelda Water Dungeon design."

Forgive my ignorance, but what is DF 12?

Couldn't the same thing be said about ninjas? You have your thieves, you have your martial artists...
