Well, if you read the Curse!, it tells you that you can not put the Item down. This means that if you were using it, you're stuck with it where it was, so maybe there isn't a general rule about it, but the Curse! itself gives you a very specific indication of what happens to the item: You can not unequip it or get rid of it
