The only way to prevent a card from working is to use a card that explicitly says "cancels". If a card does not say "cancels" then it can't stop ANYTHING. This applies to any abilities of cards in play as well. If you declare you're using the Kneepads, the target cannot "prevent" that by playing Change Sex on themselves. They would be dragged in to help, and THEN change sex... but still be stuck helping. Short answer for geeks: Munchkin works the opposite of Magic for stacks and order of resolution.
