I was thinking about this recently, because IDHMBWM, if you have a skill over...let's say 25 or something, and you roll an 18, which is the only thing you can fail on at skill level 25, would it be possible to implement a perk that states you can't fail critically, just normally?
Possibly not for PC's, just NPC's IMO.

(Perk) No Nuisance Roll. If your effective skill is over 18, you are not required to roll; you succeed automatically. This Perk is specialized by skill.

Note that by the RAW, this perk is specifically not allowed to be used for combat rolls.
I think it's worth more than a mere Perk for this....Critical Misses can change the course of a battle if you drop your weapon or somesuch. |

I would probably charge 5 points for one that was usable in combat.

The needed skill level is 16, not 18.
Note, however, that No nuisance roll doesn't apply to violent and risky things such as combat. I would be too powerful otherwise. Moreover, it isn't specialized by skill, but by "task"... e.g., it doesn't apply to ALL uses of Piloting or Area Knowledge, but only to those devoted to a specific task such as "routine trips"... == Edit: as others said. It would be too powerful for combat.

I seem to recall this coming up before. Somebody (Kromm?) broke it down and it turned out to be a surprisingly expensive advantage.
Or I could be thinking of something else. Have you attempted a search? |

Note that if you apply No nuisance roll to combat, it wouldn't just avoid critical misses, it would also negate any chance of failure when effective skill is 16+ (on the other hand, critical successes are far more likely than critical misses at those skill levels).
To answer the OP question, one could conceive a "No critical miss" Perk for combat, that allows you to attempt a skill roll at -10 to avoid the consequences of critical failures after you roll one - turning it into an ordinary failure. Specialized by skill. I like this option because it doesn't make critical misses in combat impossible, only less and less likely the more expert you are. If you feel it's still too powerful, you can worsen the penalty to -15 or whatever number you find balanced. Quote:
http://forums.sjgames.com/showthread...533#post813533 It discusses Immunity to ALL critical failures, though.

I don't think you need to spend that many points.
I think it would be sufficient to build it something like this: Ridiculous Luck (Critical Failures only -10%; Effective Skill must be 16 or greater -10%; Own skill rolls only -20%) [36] This isn't much different than what you are looking for. Once per 10 minutes you can reroll a critical failure on a skill roll, as long as your effective skill is at least 16 (i.e. if you make a Deceptive Attack that brings your effective skill down to 12, it won't help you). If you're playing with multiple people, you're quite unlikely to ever roll more than one critical failure in 10 minutes. As built, this won't help you with any Attribute rolls, or force enemies to reroll Critical Hits against you. Similar to Defensive, but more restrictive. It's definitely more expensive than a Perk, but what you've asked for is worth a lot more than a Perk. Last edited by Kazander; 07-09-2010 at 09:38 AM. To pick a nit, you mean Ridiculous Luck, not Extraordinary.
