I figured it would have the depth of a ship- so a SM +10 ship with a 300 ton hangar could carry 3 SM +6 100 ton ships, 10-20 yards long each (IIRC).

And remember that a hangar system would by definition be on the surface of the ship, as it has hangar doors facing onto space. You could design something with old-fashioned Battle Star Galactica launch tubes, but that wouldn't be the default.
