Hireling Questions

1) is it possible to steal from a hireling that is carrying an item from you (as long as it’s not big)?

2) can you swap what the hireling is carrying so long as it is your turn (EX: the hireling is carrying hammer of kneecapping, you become a dwarf sometime later and wish to swap a weapon your carrying for the hammer)?

I would say that whatever the Hireling is holding is an item in play, just like any other item in play, and can be stolen and/or switched around (unless you are in combat, of course).

Exactly that. The only issue with an Item a Hireling is using for you is what happens to it when you lose the Hireling. That's covered in the rules and I won't break it down here.
