I'd suggest combining guns, beam weapons, black powder weapons, etc, into about 3 skills based on weapon configuration (as others have suggested on the forum)- Pistols- self-explanatory Long-Arms- as you described Heavy Weapons- rocket launchers, gatling guns, etc. I can't see there being that much difference in firing a pistol, a laser pistol and a flintlock pistol if they all have the same stance and hand position. Familiarity penalties would handle the difference in flight characteristics, handling recoil, etc.
