Default Clerics and Multiple Monsters

Okay -- we're newbies and many things confuse us.... This is question 1 of 4 (all in separate threads)...

Player A is a Level 3 Cleric and is not carrying any bonus items. She opens a door and there is Mr. Bones (Level 2, Undead). Player B drops a Wandering Monster and a Platycore (Level 6, NOT Undead) into the battle.

Player A cannot defeat both monsters immediately, but argues that, in a mixed monster battle, the combined monsters acquire each others characteristics, and since one of the monsters is undead both can be considered so. Therefore, she discards 2 cards to add a +6 bonus to her level and defeats both monsters.

Is this a correct interpretation? I.e. can a cleric discard cards to increase his/her bonus against multiple monsters even if some of the monsters are not undead?

Yes. And I just had this clarified for me the other day, so I got confused as well.

Bonuses and penalties are applied to all monsters in a fight. It might not sound confusing now, but there are some very confusing situations that can come up otherwise. So if you get a bonus against undead, it applies to all monsters in the battle.

Anathantoid - Welcome to the forums.

You state you are a newbie, but you have already learned one very important thing. You posted questions in seperate threads. Some newbies overlook this rule and it does make things difficult for everyone to follow.

Good job and have fun with the games!

Both true and false.
The Platycore doesn't become Undead, but since Mr. Bones is Undead the Cleric is allowed to discard up to three cards (for a +3 each).

My understanding is the same as Jan's - the Platycore doesn't become undead, but since all monsters are fought together as a group, the cleric is allowed to add her bonus against undead to her combat against both monsters.

This is demonstrated by the following thought experiment (if my interpretation is correct):

Cleric is facing Mr. Bones. Another player adds Platycore. Cleric discards two cards to get +6 in the combat, allowed because Mr. Bones is undead. Another player uses Magic Lamp (or any other "make one monster disappear" card) to remove Mr. Bones, so that Cleric is now facing only Platycore. Although the Platycore is NOT undead, Cleric gets to retain the +6 bonus in the combat because it was added when there was an undead.

compare this with:

Cleric is facing Mr. Bones. Another player adds Platycore. Another player uses Magic Lamp (or any other "make one monster disappear" card) to remove Mr. Bones, so that Cleric is now facing only Platycore. Cleric cannot now discard two cards to get +6 in the combat, because the combat does not include undead (the Platycore did not become undead).

Without getting too wordy, Jan and Kirt are correct.
