Help Me fellow GURPS-sters!
I thought I KNEW the system - but have now come up 'blank' or empty on something a player has requested. Is there a 'Brewing' skill ? or some version of Distilling or 'making a still' skill in GURPS 4/e ? In my ongoing G: STAR TREK campaign a player asked me to add 'Brewing' to his character's list of skills. I said 'Okay, it will be there next time at default level or 1 cp spent level. Then I looked in the CHARACTERS book - and I couldn't find any way to do that. Have I missed the skill or its approximation? Am I blind? If its not 'there', what is the best way to approximate a character that has made a 'still'? The character would be doing that in the Engineering section of a starship. How do I approximate his character figuring out a way to make Homebrewed beer? - Ed C.

Hmm. not in Taverns either. Ill check Low tech later.
But I would say Professional Skill Brewer, making a still could use Mechanic which an engineer is likely to have already and Brewing could default off Chemistry.

Low-Tech Companion 3 puts forth Professional Skill (Brewer) and Professional Skill (Distiller); Brewer defaults to Cooking-3, which is probably what most homebrewers will be working from.

I have a couple of characters that have the Hobby: Home-Brewing (Root Beer) skill.

Walt uses Chemistry (Crystals) to make Meth, Hank uses Hobby (Home Brewing) to make beer.

Distilling alcohol (as in, increasing the purity of your ethanol) can totally be done off Chemistry. The paletability may be dubious, but as long as you get it up to the vodka levels or higher I suspect people are far more tolerant of quirky "moonshine".
Brewing is more a microbiology experiment... but it's really just a dark art if you're relying on wild yeasts. Ooo, then there's the exotics. I remember a story about a pharmacology company investigating tea "mushroom" (Kambucha) and rejecting it in disgust because it's actually an ecosystem, not a life form.

i have brewed with a kit a few times which is relatively easy. But without it then trying to mix the recipies and find the yeasts would be fairly difficult.
Distilling I would imagine to be a bit more tricky. Also having a still is essential and not blowing it up is the worry. |
