These servitors of Cthulhu are very different from fishmen from the material realm. They are instead "seeds" from the Great Cthulhu or other Elder Gods that have managed to penetrate into ordered reality and grow. They live deep in the ocean and build horrible cities where they try endlessly to awaken their sleeping Cthulhu. For this reason many of the more intelligent of their kind try to learn to control mana and demonic energies even though they are much more naturally adept at psionics. They often forge alliances with demons in order to acrue the great energies required to awaken Cthuhu and summon other Elder Gods into the material world. It is thought that Cthulhu was able to enter the ordered world but the gods imprsoned him in a perpetual slumber. There he dreams of release from his prison by his Deep One followers. And once released he will destroy all of ordered reality; mortal, divine and demonic.

Shallow Ones
Found in shopping centres and small disposable vehicles . The seeds of marketeers that have managed to penetrate human societies and breed . They strive tirelessly to divert others' money into maintaining their masters' foothold in our world and bring about the dawn of the Vacuous Age . They infest urbanised settlements where they spawn cafe culture neoyuppie enclaves and at designated times sit in worship to their gods before a glowing flat box in their living rooms . It's not apt to come up in a Dungeon Fantasy setting, but Deep Ones are not Deep Ones without that distinctive cocktail of Lecherousness and Xenophillia.

I just want to keep them different from sahuguin or other fishmen in DF. I like having Lovecraftian monsters as being from beyond time and space which means that they are alien to DF reality. Other fishmen would likely be fairy races or servants of demon lords that created them. So Deep Ones to me have a psionic link to Cthulhu and other Elder Gods.

An aura that causes all that see them to hear quiet whispers of insanity.
They all have the same inconsequential mannerisms bespeaking a hidden "unnatural" connection. |

But as far as DF goes and where I think Deep Ones fit is that they are Elder Things from Beyond Time and Space. They are really weird and unnerving to denizens of the material reality. This contrasts with the Sahuagin (which I like as well) who tend to be much more direct in their evil as they are devil-worshippers. DF is a kitchen sink game so I feel that it best to try to make each type of monster have the same "effect" in the DF realm as it did in the fiction source it came from. That is why I would have the sahuagin be directly aggressive to sailers and people living on the coastlines while the Deep Ones would be far more secretive and have much longer term plans. |
