Default Super Munchkin Sidekick Question

Let me set the stage for this scenario. Today we were playing Super Munchkin. I had a Sidekick I really loved in play. I also had a sidekick in my hand. No other sidekicks were in play by any other players. For whatever reason I drew the treasure card "Accidentally Off a Sidekick." The card reads:

You can use this card ONLY if a Sidekick is in play (no matter who owns him). Discard a sidekick of your choice. GO UP A LEVEL

Here's my question... I understand it says to USE the card at least one sidekick must be in play. But then it says "Discard a sidekick of YOUR CHOICE." It doesnt say it MUST be the sidekick in play it just says a sidekick of your choice. So can I discard the one I had in my hand with this card to go up a level? We argued and I lost the arguement because I was outnumber. They were insisting that I had to discard my sidekick that was in play. What do you think?

A Sidekick in your hand doesn't count as a Sidekick. Cards in your hand are just cards, unless a card or rule explicitly includes them.

Im sorry I dont understand you answer. The card does NOT specifically say to discard a sidekick in play. There are other cards for instance that tell you to discard any item, then there are cards that tell you to discard an item in play. I guess what i'm getting as is because it doesnt say "discard a sidekick in play" logic would dictate that I could discard either a sidekick in play or a sidekick in hand. Whether in play or in hand, both cards are still sidekick cards...

A card that represents a Sidekick that is in your hand is not a Sidekick, it is a card. If some effect says "Discard a Sidekick," then the "in play" is strongly implied, since the rules clearly state that a card in your hand is a card, even if that card could represent something else when in play, and not the thing it could represent. The same goes for Item, Class, Race, Power, Style, Training, Accent, Loyalty, Mojo, Hireling, Minion, Ally, Steed, Ship, Monster, Curse, and Trap*.

So, if something says to discard a Class, for example, it means to discard one that is in play, whether it says "in play" or not, since if it's not in play, a Class card isn't a Class.
