I understand the difference between "equipped" and "in play" and "in play but not used."
What I'm not sure about is, do you stack up all your "not used" Items into one pile, or spread them out so that others can still see what you have? Is this done by personal preference, or by a rule that I missed? |

If you are carrying stuff, people should be able to see what you have, so that if you make the mistake of trying to carry two Big Items, someone has the opportunity to point out your error, and so many other reasons. Maybe it's me, but it seems to me that it's a gaming meta-rule that if, by a game's rules, there are cards you aren't necessarily allowed to have in play, you should never stack up your in-play cards.

Thanks, that makes sense, and it's how we play. But the folks I learned the game from stack everything in one neat pile, so I wasn't sure.

Those people are not playing fair. In addition to what MM already said, a Thief should be able to see all Items in play so he can decide what he wants to try to steal, and someone who's trying to decide whom to hit with a Curse needs to know if his victim is sporting a Wishing Ring. (To pick only a couple of other examples why all cards in play must be visible at all times.)

You can play anything to the table sideways as long as it has value listed (and I believe this includes items that state "No Value"). The key here is that it has to be an item to be played sideways, and items are defined as having a value listed on the card.
So examples of cards that you could not play sideways are: GUAL, Item Enhancers (like ...Of Doom), and some other various cards (like Semi-Final Strike and Duck of Many Things). The only other restriction is that you can normally only have 1 big item in play, and cards on the table (sideways or not) are in play. So if you have a big item equipped you can't play a big item sideways, and you can't play 2 big items sideways. Unless, of course, you have other means that would allow you to do this. |

If the Wishing Ring is turned sideways, wouldn't that mean it can't be used? If so, I can't understand why anyone would turn it. I don't turn mine, ever. Same with potions. |

There are those who turn everything sideways that isn't actively giving you a benefit right that moment, so there's no confusion. There are others who construe the rules more strictly, and only turn permanent and not-in-use items sideways. Either way is fine with me.

Items turned sideways are those which you can not use or are not currently using. Just because it is turned sideways does not indicate that you're never allowed to use it, and when you go to use a one-shot Item, you are now using it and it's sideways manner doesn't matter anymore.
