Default Steal a Hireling

"Steal a Hireling" is a card from Munchkin 3: The Need for Steed. It says that you may discard "Steal a Hireling" as well as two other cards to steal any Hireling in play. I know that if a Hireling is killed or discarded to escape a monster, the item that the Hireling is carrying is discarded as well. If the Hireling is stolen, does the item that the Hireling is carrying go to the discard pile or to the player stealing the Hireling? Thanks!

The Munchkin 4 rules say, "If your Hireling is taken away by a Trap/Curse, by Bad Stuff, or by a change in loyalty, the items go with him!"

Steal a Hireling would be a change in loyalty, so the Item goes with the Hireling.

One point of personal confusion in the rules for me is this contradiction
concerning items carried by a hireling when they are sacrificed.

Quote:
A Hireling can sacrifice himself for you. If you lose a fight, then
instead of rolling to run away, you may discard one Hireling
and anything he is carrying.
versus a paragraph down

Quote:
• If your Hireling sacrifices himself to save you, he will loyally
drop his items first, and you can keep them.
Quoted from the most recently posted version of The Need for Steed rules.

I am wondering the same thing. My belief is that the items are supposed to go with the Hireling when he/she is sacrificed.

The new rules Replace the old rules. The most current rendition of the rules along with the FAQ and individual rulings on the Forums are, from everything I have read, observed, and over heard, are the current munchkin law.

Yes, but apparently the new rules say two different things on the same page. . . Andrew needs to answer this one, unless I'm forgetting already discussing this internally.

It looks like some old text from the original Need for Steed rules made its way into the new sheet, despite having previously been marked as errata. As the De-Ranged rules came out later in both cases and are consistent both internally and with the old NFS errata, I would go with "the Hireling's stuff is lost" pending an official ruling.
