The more I play this game the more I am thinking like a Munchkin. I was thinking about ways to be deceptive during combat for your own gain. The first idea I had was that if you helped somebody in combat, you could then play an elf card in your hand to gain a level yourself, thus they allowed you to help without realizing the extent of what you'd get from the combat. After all, you can discard a race at any time. However I do believe you can only change classes or races on your own turn, though that would still give you some possibilities, like switching to a Warrior when things are tied or to first use a Cleric's power against an undead and then switch and use the Warrior's berserk. I wanted to double check that my idea with the elf was indeed illegal, because if it isn't, I'd love to pull that on my friends during the game.
My main question that is more ambiguous, however, is using cards like "Really Impressive Title" in combat. The rules say you cannot use/equip items in battle unless they are one shot. However I saw a discussion on the website saying that "Really Impressive Title" is not an item, even though it is a permanent. Thus, is it possible to keep the card in your hand and use it during combat? It's supposedly not restricted as an item, after all. |

In this you can see that races may be played "At any time during your turn (even during combat) or as soon as you get them." If you are HELPING in combat, it is not your turn. You might be "just getting" the race card through Charity, but then you would not be in combat. There are a few situations in which you might receive the Elf card during a combat you are helping in - for example, the original owner of the card was hit with a "Curse - lose two cards". However, that is not something you can plan on. EDIT: BLESSED DNA POTION - I think you can play this in combat (don't have it in front of me) but if so, you could use this to retrieve a discarded elf card and so get the helper level for the win in a planned way. Also, if you knew the elf was the uppermost of all race cards, you could play CURSE - CHANGE RACE on yourself. Quote:

Sorry, may I conclude:
so I play Title at any moment and put it to the table because it "has a persistent bonus". Correct ? (just kinda Hireling) |

The reason it remains in use after it has been played is because it has a persistent bonus (as opposed to "Usable Once Only", or if the card explicitly states to discard after Use). The first part applies to when and why you can play it. The 2nd part is what happens to it after it has been played :) Hope that's clearer. |
