Default Level 0?

Okay -- we're newbies and many things confuse us.... This is question 2 of 4 (all in separate threads)...

What happens if some event occurs that tries to force your player level below Level 1? Do you stay at Level 1? Do you go to Level 0? Do you die?

Two ways this might happen:
a) Another player drops a "Lose 1 Level" curse on you when you are at Level 1 (just to be mean).
c) You are at Level 1 and lose a fight against, say, Mr. Bones which causes you to lose 2 levels.

No, it says in the rules that your level can never go below 1.

But your combat strength (acting level with bonuses) may go negative

And just to be clear, if you're level 1 and something says to lose a level, you don't die! Or lose any cards. Or . . . well, anything. You just smile, say, "I can't lose the level since I'm level 1" and happily ignore that instruction. It's about the only solid benefit to being level 1. :)

Another advantage is that no one expects you to win from level 1.

Jan, you are right that no one expects you to win from Level 1. Which makes it so much more fun when it happens. Might take awhile, but very fun.

Heh... although my personal best is going from level 3 to winning in a single turn, my friends don't cut me any slack in the late game even at level 1-2, especially if I have a lot of expensive items on the table. "I kick open the door; nothing interesting. Okay, I'm going to play these three GUALs, then sell this, this, this, this, and this (worth three levels as I'm a Halfling), then I'll go looking for trouble against this Potted Plant. I'm winning by 14. This is for game." I absolutely love doing that. :)

In my home play group it is considered a major loss if I win. I have 6 to 7 players making sure that I lose. To win from level one is a "you owe me dinner" coup. I've managed it twice.

Nice steak and seafood dinner, the macdonalds run wasn't bad either....
