Snails On Speed Bad Stuff?

Good Afternoon.

What really happens in the bad stuff of Snails on Speed? Do I have to choose only items or only cards in hand? Or can i choose between items and cards in hand to discard?

You can choose any combination of cards-in-hand and items-in-play that add up to the number of cards you rolled on the die.
