The exact phrase "adverse to toil" appears in a lot of pre-20th Century literature. It's not strictly conforming modern English, but rather seems to be a jab at the out of fashion nature of the subject here.

Yah, my bad, thanks for spotting it. There were some last minute changes in order to produce verses that matched up with the art, so I wasn't as diligent in rechecking those.
