Ranger discarding steed

A Ranger has two steeds in play (let's say that he has an ability that lets him do that), one of which is a tamed monster. If he wants to tame a new monster, he has to discard one of the steeds. Can he choose which steed to discard or does it have to be the previously tamed monster?

It must be the previously tamed monster.
