So I'm about to GM my first gurps campaign in a few months. Obviously by the title I'm doing a JP campaign set in the book continuity. I know we have dinosaurs in lands out of time, which helps believe me, but I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for ones not listed. Possibly some suggestions on building them. Thanks

GURPS Dinosaurs is for third edition, but it has tons. Even without a conversion guide of some kind, it's still an excellent starting point. I'm still looking for a good conversion guide, though, for my Terra Nova campaign; the stats in Lands out of Time are quite a bit different.

Well, if you can grab the great GURPS Dinosaurs for third edition, the only change you really need is on ST scores and ST-based damages.
I think that the best way is simply consider the Max Load for the old, 3rd edition ST (which was STx10) and, using the new, 4th edition rules, find what ST can lift that amount as max load (using STxST/10lbs). The formula is simple: new ST = sqrt(old max load). So, a 250 ST triceratops on third edition will have 50 ST in 4th edition. I hope this helps. |

So, just using the Strength values, the conversion would be:
New_ST = square root of ( Old_ST * 10 ) Correct? Thanks, Franklin

Lifting power, and damage. Which do you wish to model? I'm guessing damage, if you're wanting them to fight. But some of them would be cool as beasts-of-burden, so maybe lifting power?

He can always add Striking ST to up the damage values.

old_ST * 10 = new_ST * new_ST sqrt (old_ST * 10) = new_ST and (new_ST*new_ST) / 10 = old_ST its a bit lumpy cause old_ST 15 would be 12,25 new_ST and a new_ST of 15 an old_ST of 22.5 .. so for Human sized Characters you would run in a bit of a point balance issue ... but for large beasts ...its legit in my oppinion.. |

There's enough unknowns in dinosaur behavior that just saying 'ST = 2 * (weight in lb)^1/3' or 'ST = 25 * (weight in tons)^1/3' and then making up all the other numbers will get you close enough for game purposes. Probably model DR as around HP/10 - 1.

There entries were written with an eye toward real-world paleontology, using some of the more cutting-edge science from the Lionang formation discoveries and recent analyses on biomechanics. If you want a more traditional view of dinos, you might want to modify these a bit. The Jurassic Park franchise started out using paleontological science in transition between an older "traditional" view and the more modern understanding held today (it was quite cutting-edge for its time), but as the sequels dragged on the science became more and more dodgy. A Jurassic Park "velociraptor" (which could be based on my Utahraptor stats), for example, would not have wing assisted incline running (and might have higher IQ and Ground Move). Luke |

I would definitely prefer to use yours. If you're feeling industrious, what I need is Late-Cretaceous (~70mya) North America, probably starting with wetlands
