Default Curse of the cat goddess vs. sacrificing a comrade

The curse of the cat goddess forces you to fail the next time you have to run away. Most comrades can be sacrificed before the run away die roll to allow auto escape from the monster(s) in the combat. Is this legal to so for a munchkin to do so if they are under the curse or would they have to fail and suffer the bad stuff? If they do get to sacrifice to escape unscathed would the curse remain there until the next time they have to run away or would it be discarded since the comrade took the fall?

You HAVE to fail; you cannot sacrifice a Comrade to escape your fate.
