In my games, a gem like that is probably just an energy storage mechanism... though it could potentially be a very powerful one!

It could be the focus device for a magitech fireball cannon, though I'd expect it to be red rather than purple.

It would make a nice a mind control stone you set up somewhere hidden and let influence anyone who wanders too close.

Break it up and use it for wand tips.

It might not be a magic item: something about it makes me think its an egg or pupa for a magical or alien beast. Or maybe even the creature itself.
