One of the new improvements I've added in the last go-around of data files is a programming "language" filter for Notepad++ for data files. It's not perfect, but it does a pretty good job of filtering the formatting for data files to help you look for inconsistencies. To help with the filtering I added a few non-data file code bits into data files; probably the most notable being the \[START] and \[STOP] that's been added to the end of the asterisk spacer lines to demark the beginning and end of data file sections. These help with collapsing code sections.
You can download the xml file from my website:

You can import the language filter in Notepad++ by unzipping the xml file then in Notepad++ going to
Language -> Define Your Language -> Import (Button)
and select the XML file to import.
In addition Emily (aka Bruno) has assembled a language definition for GDF files in EditPad Pro from JGSoft.
Installation (IN THIS ORDER):
Unzip the Syntax Schema into %APPDATA%\JGsoft\EditPad Pro 7
Save the Language definition somewhere. In EditPad, go to Options -> Configure File Types -> Import (bottom left) and pick the INI from wherever you saved it.
