It's in the hexflower so there's something between attack and run away. I've always played that if something can attack, it can defend. I think a better question is
why would an animal defend, rather than just run away. Disengage may be a better choice here.
Side note: for Wizard Xanos on page 19, change the "Defend" to Blur (self).
