Yeah well part of that is because the United States is:
1) The foremost of the "good guy" countries.
2) The most powerful country in the world.
In Transhuman Space:
1) The United States's "good guy" credentials are under strain
2) Depending on the writer, the United States is either: important but eclipsed and facing other rising powers; a crumbling empire whose great cities are sinking into the ocean and facing insurgency at home; or somewhere in between.
