Just as a lark, I might try dropping the attacker's roll from the base version, while making it available as an enhancement, at least for Fearfulness.

As I said above, the chance of success on a quick contest isn't the same as a success check. The double dipping makes sense in a quick contest. But you can always change it for your game :)
