Default Re: ORICHALCUM UNIVERSE: The Homosapient Species:

Homo vertara

TAXONOMY: Animalia Chordata Mammalia Primates Hominidae Homo vertara

Average Height: Male 1.9-2.1 meters, female 1.7 to 1.9 meters
Average Mass: Male 90-130 kilograms, female 80-90 kilograms
Average Lifespan: 80-100 Terran years (unaugmented)
Sexual Maturity: 12-15 Terran years
Menopause: ~55 Terran years
Average Female Fertility Rate (ideal circumstances): 2.30
Average Racial Flux Points: 1 (this is average, because the average Flux Point value for the Veranis population is +2, while the Taratara population averages 0.)

The species known on Earth in 2123 as H. vertara is named for the first two worlds on which Terrestrians encountered 'native' populations of this species, Veranis and Taratara (Dyaxor A V and Dyaxor A IV respectively).

In appearance, H. vertara look much like humans, but they average slightly taller and with (usually) a slighter build (though not hugely so). This species has the same comfort range in terms of gravity and temperature as Terrestrial humans. They are omnivorous, but in their native environments they are heavily frugivorous. All adult H. vertara are heavily lactose intolerant, even as infants they have difficulty digesting any milk but that of their own species. (Even the milk of other Homosapient species is usually not readily digestible to their infants).

H. vertara displays a remarkable vulnerability to ionizing radiation, far more so than humans or most other Homosapient species. Dosages that would result simply in temporary sickness in a human will generally be fatal to an H. vertara.

H. vertara have sharply pointed ears.* Their hearing spans the entire frequency range of human hearing and goes both higher and lower in terms of pitch, and their hearing runs about 50% more sensitive in general relative to Terrestrial humans. Their sense of vision is comparable to that of humans, and they see the same optical frequency range that humans see, with a slightly greater color discrimination at the blue end of the band. Their sense of smell is similar to that of humans, but they can distinguish the scent of different types of fruit, and the ripeness of such, far more easily than humans.

The skin colors of H. vertara show the same range as humans, but their hair color is almost entirely what Terrestrians would call 'red'. It ranges from dark red-brown through a golden-red to a full-on scarlet red. Other hair colors are extremely rare. Eye colors tend to be deep blue or green. Their eyes tend to be slightly larger relative to their faces than is typical with humans.

Like humans, H. vertara has multiple female fertility cycles for a given year, but they are one of the few species of Homosapient with a fecundity almost comparable to H. sapiens. Any given fertile period is slightly less likely to result in pregnancy than with H. sapiens, but their females remain fertile longer, partly counterbalancing this trait. They also have a slightly greater tendency toward twin and triplet pregnancies than humans, most of them identicals.

The psionic potentials of H. vertara are similar to those of humans, and just as latent, with one major exception. Most of the twin and triplet births among H. vertara display a strong telepathic linkage with their genetic clones, often with greater than usual range. (The occasional non-identical multiple births show no such tendency.)

H. vertara and H. sapiens are one of the cases where non-fertile offspring can result from sexual intercourse. Such births are somewhat exceptional, but they do happen from time to time. Such hybrids display traits of both species.

In GURPS terms, H. vertara has ST +1, HT +1, and Acute Hearing. Most of their identical twins and triplets (and very rarely higher numbers) display a telepathic connection with Extended Range: Global and an effective Power of 10 with each other. Terrestrial humans have a tendency to find them Attractive, at least aesthetically, and often sexually. They have Vulnerability: Ionizing Radiation, relative to humans.

* In the relatively short time that they have been in contact with Terrestrials in 2123, there is already a tendency to react badly to 'Spock' and 'Vulcan' jokes.
