Yolanda Washington was born and raised in the Upton neighborhood of West Baltimore. With a father in prison for murder and a mother strung out on heroin, she's had to look out for herself since an early age. In her forty years, she has never driven a car and has left Baltimore only once.

That one occasion was the time she attended the Job Corps Center in Woodstock, MD as a teenager. It was there she got started on the road to her career in nursing, and she left the program as a Nursing Assistant. After that she worked her way through nursing school back in Baltimore while changing bed pans at the local nursing home.

Today she's come a long way from those humble beginnings is now a veteran nurse with a tough, no nonsense attitude and close to two decades of experience as an RN. She's the one her colleagues depend on to handle the most unruly of patients, as she's not afraid to go hands on if she has to. Yet, despite her rough exterior, there's little doubt that she has genuine compassion for the people under her care.
