Build Notes: Symbol Drawing is used as a core skill. The two Quick and Focused Casting perks are from Pyramid 3-66, I have just enough skill points in magic skills to take two perks.
While she works for a group that might be a valid patron, they do not provide the assistance a Patron would. In general she would have better luck going to the local charm shop for assistance.
Some tweaks to the character sheet.
And some tweaks to the fluff
Spoiler:
Background/Fluff:
Employment
Job Title: Head of Portland Field Research and Defense Division
Employer: Cherion Research Group
Description: Cherion is less than generous with funding when it doesn't have to. Her supposed lab/office is rented in one of those fancy skyscrappers, and its actually probably a violation of several laws to be doing lab work in it. There is also a small office, a small conference room and a area for reception. The lab equipment is mostly second hand stuff from the larger Cherion laboratories, and not the ones that get the best state of the art toys either. After rent, Jenny's wages and utilties Lara generally needs to chip in some of her pay check to make sure the lights stay on.
Lara and Jenny are the only two employees in the Portland Division. Lara's wage is suprisingly large for the level of funding this division otherwise gets, but corporate works in mysterious ways. This is probably a good thing since when Lara needs equipment to catch a monster she has to buy it out of pocket. The day to day work involves collecting boring samples, analyzing samples, writing reports that nobody reads, and maybe doing a small amount of research on a new product. Plus begging for an increase in budget at least enough to cover the raises HR gives to Jenny, and general inflation.
The exciting work involves both killing monsters (or witches or whatever) that are deemed a threat to the general public, and trying to collect samples from monsters. Cherion's supposed goal is pharmacutical research and protecting the world from evil, although Lara isn't sure how her work helps with that. (Except for the stabbing evil bit. That's pretty obviously protecting the world from evil.)
Connections to the SUpernatural World
Obviously Cherion is a major connection to the supernatural world. It means she has access to their electronic library with a decent collection of material on the arcane, weird and so forth.
She also knows a handful of local magic book shops and charm shops in addition to the section of the library that has the real books of arcane lore. (Fun fact, if you return a book to the library they will file/reshelve it properly even if they didn't own the book in the first place.)
Friends/Family
Jenny: The only other employee in Portland she acts as a secretary/lab tech/researcher. She's actually increadibly talented in STEM type areas although her ability proficiency in the field a.k.a. monster fighting, is somewhat lacking.
Mr. Smith: He seems to be an older gentleman, kindly and polite. He runs one of the larger arcane stores in Portland, and is often up to date on the local gossip. Once you get to know him you realize he seems to have pictures of himself going at least 200 years or more back and he is almost certainly not the kindly old man he appears to be. He hates shop lifters and commonly talks about how he hates to see pointless wastes of life. Its commonly assumed he is an immortal of some sort who feeds on shop lifters.
Mr and Mrs Night: Lara's parents. They currently live in Chicago as "artists". But they haven't starved to death so that's good. Lara gives them a very edited version of her job.
Donald, George, Amy, Kitty: Lara's tabletop gaming group. Their only real contact with the supernatural world is Lara. Interested in learning magic, Lara has given them the safest spells she can find while they are still learning.
House:
Lara lives in what amounts to either a cheap penthouse or a expensive apartment near downtown Portland. She also has a storage locker near the edge of the city in a rundown industrial area. Importantly it has little in the way of security cameras. Its not under her name and its where she keeps her questionably legal items.
Reputation:
Cherion researchers aren't exactly hidden from the public eye. They collect a pay check, work at a lab with Cherion on the door and so forth. And while Cherion usually only deals with monsters in two ways. Killing them, or capturing them alive and experimenting on the monster until its dead. Its generally not enough to cause random monsters to come knocking (that would be the enemy disadvantage); Cherion does have ability to deal with monsters and they aren't exactly happy when someone hunts down one of their employees.
But neither is Cherion a fantical monster killing organization, so not many creatures want to draw attention to themselves. Of course, if they already have Cherion's attention they will be less than friendly to say the least. Most monsters will assume you are their to kill or kidnap them. Somehow whenever Lara travels outside of Portland she is invariably marked as a Cherion employee
Magical/Fighting Style:
Lara's magical style isn't really a full-fledged style, but elements she is good at learned with access to a handful of magic tomes and later Cherion's library database. Even so much of the core of it can be traced back to Norse traditions, in particular ones used in summoning a beserker trance. Lara didn't bother with learning any sort of Herbal Magic instead going to the more modern alchemical elixers.
The fluff has a bit of an update on her friends, and notes on her reputation and fighting style. The character sheet changed disturbing voice for a reputation. Not sure if the reputation is priced right, but I eyeballed monsters at half price. I also dropped a level of magery, shaved off a few levels of skill and upped IQ a point. I also added another luck advantage for magic only and costs HP. Think of it as using your body to eat spell energies as a last resort. Finally attractive, and Allies (Jenny) were added.)
