Can an Elf win by helping?

[Mod note: This question was part of another thread about an unrelated topic. I spun it off into a new thread.]

Other quick question, can an Elf gain level 10 by helping another player in combat? In that situation, do both players win as they would if the original player was reaching level 10 and the helper wasn't?

Yes, an Elf can win by reaching level 10 by helping as he is gaining that level by killing a monster.

The rule that allows the helper to win the game as well is an optional one, so it is up to you how you interpret it when you are playing with that rule and an Elf gets to 10 and the combat owner doesn't.

The Elf wins because it got to Level 10 as the result of a combat. That's official.

It is also worth noting that said elf would have to be asked to help. So the asking player would effectively be giving them the game...

This is true. Although there's nothing stopping a player from making an offer, that offer must be accepted. (There are some cards in expansions that let a player force his way into a fight, but very, very few. The general rule is as I stated.)
